Child sexual abuse affects over one quarter of the national population, with reporting of incidents increasing daily. It is estimated that one out of three girls and one out of seven boys will be sexually abused by the time they reach 18 years of age. People are not aware that it happens to children of every class, culture, race religion and gender. They are usually abused by fathers, step-fathers, uncles, brothers, neighbors, strangers, baby-sitters, and grandparents. All sexual abuse is damaging, whether it happened only once, or several times over many years. The trauma continues after the abuse ends and the long-term affect frequently interferes with day-to-day functioning. Sexual abuse has many forms ranging from forcible rape to being made to watch pornographic films. The severity of the abuse, however, is not the issue. The degree of the abuse is determined by the feelings the child experiences, because after it has happened, the world is never the same again for that person. Family Service Sexual Assault Services, our number one goal is to
provide quality service to victims and offenders involved in sexual
abuse cases. This is best facilitated by a community treatment
approach. This involves the WV Division of Human Services, the
court system, including the police, prosecutors, attorneys, judges,
and probation and parole officers, medical personnel, the school
system, and other appropriate human service organizations, individuals
and family members also can call for information and appointments.
